This tutorial is an evidence-based discussion of the impact of parent-adolescent conflict in families where the parent has experienced interpersonal abuse & neglect. The impact on this early abuse by someone close to the (now) parent has many negative effects on their current day parenting and attachment with their children.
Dr Colegrove looks at traditional approaches to trauma recovery and illustrates how various cognitive and sensory treatment protocols work to help the parent resolve their early trauma. As well as discussing common trauma approaches Dr Colegrove presents her treatment program titled ‘Tuning relationships to Music’.
This systemic and evidence-based program explores the use of both cognitive and sensory aspects of trauma therapy and combines them with improvisational models. Through music improvisation parents and adolescents are encouraged to reflect on how they respond non verbally to the other, and how they may move forward with calm and respectful communication.
The tutorial includes definitions of interpersonal trauma and the impact on families, limitations to traditional trauma therapy models and proposes a new program model which integrates psycho-education, emotion coaching and music as a vehicle to teach non verbal communication skills.
Dr Vivienne Colegrove is a couple and family counsellor, and music therapist. She has many years experience working in mental health and trauma recovery services, and in private practice. She specialises in supporting individuals, couples and families to achieve relational healing where traumatic events have caused relationship wounds.
Vivienne draws on a range of evidence-based approaches, including the emotion coaching and emotion-focussed methods developed by John Gottman and Sue Johnson. She believes strongly that the willingness to learn and use the skills of ‘emotional intelligence’ in our closest relationships is key in not only healing hurts, but to creating the best relationships possible. When working with trauma, she adheres to the ISTSS Complex Trauma Treatment guidelines, drawing on additional techniques that attend to the unique neuro-physiological and relational challenges faced by those who have been exposed to family violence and/or childhood abuse.
Vivienne recently completed her PhD at the Mindful Centre for Research and Training in Developmental Health, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Melbourne. Her thesis developed and tested a unique way of working with families called Tuning Relationships with Music™, using a randomised controlled design, and found that it was an effective way of helping parents and their adolescents improve their relationship and reduce conflict.
Vivienne is qualified and experienced in offering clincial supervision to counsellors, family therapists and music therapists. She is available either face-to-face or on Skype. To make an appointment, please contact her directly at vmcolegrove@icloud.com
